Current Cost CC128 Envi - WHITE

Current Cost CC128 Envi - WHITE

Modular and flexible

We've been pretty excited here about the addition of the Current Cost CC128 Envi to our line-up.  It's the first wireless energy monitor we've seen that forms part of a modular system which can be modified and expanded according to the needs of the user.  The basic system is a standard wireless electricity monitor with an 'install and forget' seven year transmitter battery and mains powered display unit.  The display unit provides all the usual real-time information on electricity use in kWh, cost in pence, and a memory for the previous day/week/month.  The manufacturer has also thoughtfully included a clock and temperature display which are large enough to read from a reasonable distance.  A bar chart shows you what proportion of your energy use has been expended during the previous day, evening and night.

Many users will buy the new CC128 Envi and use it exactly as it is, straight out of the box and be perfectly happy with it, but for the more adventurous owner, the CC128 has quite a few exciting features.

Monitor appliances around the home

In an industry first, the CC128 has the capacity to monitor data from nine extra channels in addition the the basic meter sensor and transmitter.  This means that if required, you could monitor a second meter - or perhaps a second supply on the same display.  Different rates per unit/kWh can be set for each channel, if needed.  The primary use for these extra channels is expected to be for monitoring individual appliances around the home.  Within the next few months the manufacturer will be releasing their 'Individual Appliance Modules' (IAMs).  Up to nine of these little plug-in sockets can be monitored by the CC128 display unit via the extra channels, so you can see how much electricity each connected appliance is using over time.  It's well known that older household appliances (e.g. fridges and freezers) can consume much more electricity than their rating label suggests.  Through monitoring the consuption of these appliances you will be able to identify which ones you should replace and which ones are still economical to keep in service.

PC connectivity built-in

There are already one or two monitors on the market supporting connectivity with PCs and Current Cost have built this capability into the CC128 Envi.  Through the addition of the separately available data cable and open source software you can potentially turn your PC into a powerful electricity management system.  Although Current Cost do not provide their own software, there are already three separate programs available via the internet which provide compatibility with the CC128.  As the data stream from the CC128 is in the XML format, we expect to see even more sophisticated and flexible programs developed by the user community in the future - you may even want to contribute yourself!  The CC128 stores up to eight year's worth of data in its own internal memory.

Best of both worlds

We really like the way the CC128 Envi offers the best of both worlds.  If you just want a standard, reliable monitor, it does that.  If you feel like hooking it up to your PC, you can do that too.  All the data will be stored in the memory, waiting to be downloaded from when you first switched it on.  And if you want to start looking more closely at appliances around your home and how much electricity they use, you'll soon be able to do that too with the individual appliance monitors.
