After a long wait, the IAM is now back in stock with Current Cost and is expected to be available through selected retailers within the next few days.

These Individual Appliance monitors are exclusively for the UK market, having a standard three pin UK plug and piggy-back socket. They work in conjunction with a range of Current Cost wireless electricity monitors including the EnviR, Envi, CC128 and TREC. Using these IAMs, Current Cost monitors are capable of displaying and recording the electricity use of up to nine individual appliances. This is useful for more detailed analysis and understanding of electricity use in the home or small office.

We've tested these Current Cost IAMs and found them to be easy to set up using the provided instructions, with a good transmission range. The IAM enables your Current Cost monitor to assess the consumption of separate appliances over time, for example, an older fridge/freezer which may be using far more power than the energy label suggests. You might also wish to monitor the collective consumption for a group of appliances connected via a multi-way power strip e.g. a home cinema system. It should be noted that the IAM data collected by the display unit is not currently visible in Google Powermeter. We think it's likely that future third part software will address this issue.

Geeks will be disappointed to learn that the IAM does not take advantage of its connection to the electricity supply to determine actual voltage and power factor. Perhaps we'll see this at some point in the future.

At the time of writing, Current Cost are the only manufacturer to offer domestic wireless Individual Appliance Monitoring and if you already have a Current Cost monitor, it has to worth giving a few of these a go.
