Plug in Power Monitor
This sturdy, well-built plug-in power monitor is a popular choice and has been receiving favourable reviews from 'techie' buyers for a few years now. Although it has no battery backup, this monitor wins frequent praise for its ability to accurately measure, display and record the power consumption of devices which operate on very low power, a task which some other monitors can struggle with. The monitor itself draws only 1 watt in use.
It's a no-nonsense design with the plug socket sensibly situated below the display, making it easy to read whilst still plugged in. Unlike other similar monitors, this one doesn't offer a built-in facility to display or record 'Cost', although because it measures and totals power consumed over time you can still calculate the total cost manually if required. We get the impression that the confirmed accuracy of this monitor attracts the more technically minded buyer, who is less likely to be worried about the omission of a 'Cost' display function anyway.
In conclusion, if accuracy is your primary concern and you just want to check exactly how many watts any given device is consuming either instantaneously or over time, this is the one to go for.

Energenie Plug-in Power Meter
This is a smart plug-in meter from Energenie with an LCD display and built-in battery back up. The meter is nicely designed and well put together, but it can be a bit difficult to read the display from above as you'd likely need to when in use due to the angle of the LCD. Thankfully, the battery backup means you can unplug it to read the collected information.
The Energenie plug-in power meter is able to display the following values:
Current Time
Live Voltage
Live Current
Cumulative total electricity usage.
Total on time and total electricity usage.
Frequency.
Power factor.
Adjustable price / kWh.

Efergy Plug-in Power Meter
This plug-in power meter from Efergy may not have as many features as some of the more expensive models, but it is usually found at a very reasonable price and covers all the basics. It can easily show you amongst other things: how much electricity the plugged-in appliance is consuming in Watts / KiloWatts, how much this costs per hour, the supply voltage at your home and how much electricity the connected appliance has used over time in kWh or pence.
- Working voltage: 90-250VAC @ 50-60Hz
- Power range: 0.2 - 3120 Watts
- Current range: 0 - 13.00 Amps
- Voltage range: 90 - 250 Volts
- Cost per unit: 0.00 - 99.99 £/kWh
It's worth pointing out that in common with most budget plug-in monitors, this one has no battery backup, so you have to remember to take your readings before unplugging it.

Belkin F7C005QAF Conserve Insight Plug in Monitor
This attractive plug-in monitor from well-known brand Belkin is not the cheapest on the market, but does have one or two unique features to make it worth serious consideration.
The most obvious difference is that the Belkin Conserve Insight Monitor display screen is fitted to a trailing lead. We think this is a really practical design feature, especially useful if you need to study the consumption of appliances where the power socket it out of sight, where a regular plug in monitor would be impractical. You can set your rate per kWh so that the monitor is able to calculate the cost of running the connected appliance on the fly. Additionally, the Belkin monitor is able to track the energy use of appliances which don't necessarily run at full power all the time, like a fridge or freezer, for example. Using this 'averaged' information, the Belkin is able to calculate approximately how much it will cost to run your appliance on a monthly/annual basis and how many kilowatts are consumed.
We think the Belkin Conserve Insight monitor is particularly useful for monitoring the power use and on-going running costs of appliances like washing machines, dishwasers, microwaves, fridge/freezers etc. With this information, you should be able to determine if it is worth replacing older appliances with newer, more energy efficient models.

Plug-in Power Meter
This German-designed plug-in power meter will accurately measure the power consumption of individual electrical appliances within the home. We've chosen to feature it at Electricity-Monitor.com because it's one of the few meters of its kind with its own internal power supply and a user-definable rate per kWh.
Use this power meter to determine which appliances are wasting electricity in standby mode and which ones are okay to leave plugged in. With this power meter, we worked out that our mobile phone chargers only actually draw power when the phone is charging.

Radiator Booster Mk3
New and improved for winter 2011/12 the new Radiator Booster Mk3 has a fresh streamlined look and a more sturdy shell. The Radiator Booster Mk3 sits on top of your radiator and is activated automatically whenever your radiators heat up. An internal, low power fan quietly draws air up through the radiator more rapidly than would occur by normal convection. This improves the circulation of heated air, allowing rooms to heat more rapidly and reducing cold spots.

Radiator Booster Mk2
Radiator Booster Mk2. This has to be a gimmick, right? Some plastic box thingy that plugs into the mains and sits on top of your radiators. Surely this can't be a serious enery saving product, can it?
Well actually, the manufacturers of this seemingly simple device have hit on a rather good idea and we like it a LOT because effective ways to save on your ever increasing home heating bills are few and far between. With electriciy use, there's nearly always room for savings, but with gas it's not so easy. Most homeowners have very few gas burning appliances, typically the central heating boiler, maybe a gas fire in the lounge, perhaps a cooker with a gas hob, and very rarely - a gas tumble dryer. The only practical suggestions are to make sure your home is fully insulated and turn down the heating thermostat, meaning you should simply put up with the house being colder in the winter. Or you could cook less food...

Black & Decker TLD100 Thermal Leak Detector
This might seem an unusual product to be featuring in our Engery Saving Accessories section, but please bear with us. Domestic heating is likely to be the largest consumer of energy in your home, but there is little scope for any reduction in consumption other than increasing your insulation and turning down the thermostat.
So how do you know if your home is properly insulated or not?
You've probably seen those hi-tec thermal imaging cameras on television where an image is produced of the home, showing the hotspots where the house is 'leaking' heat away. Those cameras are frighteningly expensive, but there is potentially another way you can check for cool/hotspots using an Infrared Thermometer like this one from Black & Decker.
Infrared thermometers measure radiated heat, so by using one of these, you will be able to examine the windows, walls and doors of your home to gain an understanding of the heat potentially being lost. Internally, lost heat will show up as cold spots. Conversely, lost heat on the outside of your home will be measured as hot spots. There are quite a few Infrared Thermometers on the market to choose from. We've selcted the Black & Decker TLD100 here because it incorporates an easy to read light beam projection system to show hot or cold spots, making it easier to scan larger areas.

Efergy Shower Time
This neat little shower timer from Efergy is more than just a simple timer. It comes supplied with a measuring bag so that you can calculate how long your shower takes to use one litre of water, which is then set in the timer's memory. Once set, you decide the maximum amount of water (Efergy suggest 35 litres) you want to use each shower, then the Shower Time shows you how much water you are using during your shower. Of course, unless you take only cold showers, saving hot water saves energy too, so limiting the time spent in the shower conserves water AND saves energy.
We think these timers will make a splendid gift, so why not add a few to your order and pass them around the family?

OneClick IntelliPanel TV
The Oneclick TV IntelliPanel™ learns to recognise the signal from your television remote control; this enables it to activate your television and all associated equipment automatically from standby mode whenever you are ready to use it. When you have finished using your television you switch it off in the normal way using your remote control and the IntelliPanel™ does the rest!
No more standby – no more wasted power.
Instead of simply switching off the television at this point the clever IntelliPanel™ continues to record the amount of power being drawn by the television and waits until the internal circuitry has completely powered down in to a standby state, only then does the IntelliPanel™ switch the television and peripheral equipment off.
Switching the television power off immediately (as if pulling the plug from the mains) can cause corruption of the internal software in some digital televisions. This can result in the television having to go through a re-boot process. The Intellipanel prevents this from happening.
