Scottish and Southern Energy have joined Scottish Power and British Gas in announcing an increase in their prices of 18% for gas and 11% for electricity from 14th September. Scottish and Southern are the third of the ‘big six’ energy suppliers to announce dramatic price increases and it can only be a matter of time before the other three suppliers follow suit. In a further blow to already struggling UK households, British Gas have announced that their prices for gas will increase by 18% and electricity by 16% from 18th August. Similar price increases were announced by Scottish Power last month adding to fears that we are likely too see price hikes from all of the ‘big six’ energy suppliers before the autumn. In a shock announcement from Scottish Power, 2.4 million customers will see the cost of their electricity rise by 10% and gas by a whopping 19% from 1st August 2011.  Scottish Power blame the rises on increasing wholesale energy costs and global market volatility.
