Wireless Energy Monitors

If you're serious about cutting your electricity bills, fitting a wireless energy monitor should be top of your priority list. Although we all have electricity meters in our homes, they're no use hidden away in a cupboard only to be read once or twice a year. You need to get in touch with your electricity use and a wireless energy monitor will show you instantly how much electricity you're using twenty four hours a day.

In fact, the Government are so convinced that these 'real time energy monitors' enable consumers to make genuine and sustained reductions in their energy usage habits that they intend to incorporate them into the proposed 'Smart Meter' roll out due to complete in 2020. This proposed upgrade to metering of energy in the UK is good news, but 2020 is a long way ahead. Thankfully, you don't need to wait for one of these new Smart Meters to be installed before reaping the energy saving benefits of a wireless energy monitor. There is already a good selection of wireless energy monitors available which can quickly and easily be added to any standard home electricity meter, so you can start making savings today.  With the prices of these monitor systems starting from just £19.95, the payback period for an average household should be considerably less than a year.

Simple to fit

Wireless energy monitors have three parts: A sensor which simply clips around the outside of one of the wires at your meter, a battery operated transmitter unit which sends the information picked up by the sensor, and a battery or mains operated wireless display unit. The wireless display unit can be placed anywhere in your home enabling you to constantly review your energy consumption and make those all important changes in use.

Accuracy

We've seen quite a bit of discussion about the accuracy of wireless electricity monitors.  This is a reasonable point considering that the sensors are not directly attached to the mains supply.  We have performed extensive long term tests on the ability of a range of models to track the total daily electricity use of a home in kWh and found the accuracy to range from plus or minus 1.5 to 30% deviation compared to the figure suggested by the supply meter. This is quite a dramatic range, to say the least.

BUT DON'T PANIC!  Although it would seem logical to assume that the most accurate monitor will be most helpful in reducing your electricity consumption, this isn't the case in practice.  ANY MONITOR will help you reduce consumption provided that you install and use it correctly and pay attention to the rise and fall of the figure displayed on the screen, whether in pence or kWh.  The latest range of monitors are actually aiming to move the focus away from figure based displays in preference to traffic light systems, speedo style readings and so on.  If you think about it, you don't need to know how much energy you are using to save.  You just need to know if it's higher or lower than ideal.  You could, for example, have a monitor which makes a noise which becomes increasingly loud as your consumption rises.  We doubt it would be popular, but it would certainly get the message across.

Can't I just get a 'free' one from my energy supplier?

It depends on how you define 'free'. There have been some instances where energy companies have supplied basic wireless electricity monitors on request with no strings attached. Unfortunately, the free monitors are more often tied to 'green tariffs' as a promotional tool. You see them advertised on TV all the time. Whilst these green tariffs are a source of satisfaction to those wanting to know that their energy is being generated in a sustainable way, the cost per unit or kWh is typically much higher compared to standard tariffs. Consequently, you end up paying far more for your electricity each year than it would have cost if you had just bought your own monitor and switched to the best value supplier. If you're thinking of going down the route of accepting a 'free' monitor from your energy supplier, we advise that you examine the prices you will be paying for your energy very carefully.  Use a comparison service such as uSwitch to find the lowest priced energy supplier for your area and then compare this to the total amount you will be paying to qualify for a 'free' monitor.  With a bit of luck, the energy monitor tied tariff may even be listed on the price comparison tool making it easier to see how much extra you will be paying each year in exchange for the monitor.

Wide choice of models

We provide reviews and advice on the full range of wireless energy monitors with availabilty at the lowest prices so you can choose which one suits you best. If you're not sure which one to go for, take a look through our wireless energy monitor comparison table to compare the features and specification of every monitor side by side.

Owl CM160 USB Wireless Energy Monitor

NEW MODEL OWL CM160 - NOW WITH BUILT IN USB!

Owl wireless energy monitors have been the UK's top selling monitor brand since their launch back in 2007 and that success looks set to continue with their latest model, the Owl CM160 USB.  Externally, there is very little obvious difference between the CM160 and the older CM119, except for the improved and easier to read display.  This is reassuring to note, because Owl monitors are renowned for their superior build quality, accuracy, amazing battery life and tenacious wireless link between transmitter and receiver.

Launched in September 2010, the Owl CM160 USB is their most advanced model.  Building on the success of the previous Owl CM119, the new Owl CM160 now adds built-in data storage for up to two years electricity use, a USB port (cable and software included), plus Economy 7 AND Economy 10 multiple tariff compatibility.  With these new advanced features, you'd expect a considerable price-hike, but the Owl CM160 RRP is only £5 more than the basic CM119 - about the cost of a USB cable on its own, and don't forget, the Owl CM160 USB still includes all the best-selling features of the older CM119!

Owl Micro II (mk2) CM180 Wireless Energy Monitor

The Micro is Owl's entry-level energy monitor. It has proven popular with households seeking a low-cost, simple to use, no-frills device to keep an eye on their electricity use - without skimping on quality. It has a clear, easy to read display.

Owl have completely redesigned the Micro for 2012 and added a host of new functions, whilst maintaining a low purchase price. We particularly like the new daily cumulative use graph, which enables you to see at a glance how much electricity has been used so far today. A simple history function provides the facility to compare use over previous days, weeks and months so you can easily see if you are managing to reduce consumption over time.

The new Owl Micro CM180 may be small, but it has a good pedigree so you can rely upon it to have an excellent transmission range, long battery life and class-leading accuracy.

Owl CM119 Wireless Energy Monitor

Without a doubt, the original Owl was the UK's best-selling and most widely recognised wireless energy monitor.  It had excellent build quality, produced figures you can trust, had amazing battery life and a tenacious wireless link between transmitter and receiver.

Updated in Autumn 2008 from the original best seller, the Owl CM119 adds a new integrated cumulative memory feature, greater accuracy, Economy 7 multiple tariff compatibility, three selectable transmitter channels and a staggering estimated four year battery life on the transmitter unit.

If you're certain that you won't be needing the USB connectivity of the newer Owl CM160, the CM119 makes a good alternative choice with a lower purchase price.

Owl CM120 USB Connect

The Owl CM120 USB Connect receiver turns your Windows PC into a sophisticated real-time electricity monitoring system.  Working in conjunction with your existing Owl CM119, Owl Micro* or CM113 (original Owl) transmitter, the USB Connect receives the same data as your display unit and relays the information on your PC in real-time at six second intervals using the supplied software.  The software allows you to 'drill down' into the stored data through years, months, days and hours and you can even review your electricity use on a minute-by-minute level, if required.  The software provides the facility to export the stored data on your PC as a comma separated variable (.csv) file for independent analysis.

Please note that the USB Connect receiver contains no internal memory or power supply.  It is powered via the PC's USB socket and the PC software will record received data only while your computer and program are both running. Compatible with Windows XP and Vista.  *Compatibility with Owl Micro requires a download the latest USB Connect software version from the manufacturer's website.

Owl CM113 Wireless Energy Monitor

The original Owl wireless electricity monitor.

Since the discontinuation of the very popular Electrisave in the UK, the product was re-branded as The Owl and distributed by 2 Save Energy Ltd.  The rebranded Owl CM113 monitor was identical to the original Electrisave in every respect, save for the RRP.  The Owl CM113 energy monitor RRP was a full £50 less than it's predecessor.  This massive reduction in price kick-started the UK energy monitor market.

You may still find these older monitors for sale from time to time.  They are a good, basic, reliable system.

Efergy e2 USB Wireless Energy Monitor

NEW MODEL FROM EFERGY - NOW WITH USB AND SOFTWARE FOR CONNECTION TO A PC.

At last!  An affordable wireless energy monitor with a built-in USB port for easy connection to a PC computer.  The Efergy e2 carries the same intuitive and comprehensive memory function now synonymous with the Efergy brand, with improved transmission range, a bold easy to read display and excellent build quality.  The display of the e2 is clear and un-cluttered.  Although it appears to show less information than its Elite sibling, the most important figures are all still there including direct access to historic data in the memory.

We're very excited about the new Efergy e2.  Judging by the daily requests we receive for information on wireless energy monitors which can be connected to a computer for analysis, this monitor is exactly what many of you have been waiting for.

Efergy Plug-in Power Meter

This plug-in power meter from Efergy may not have as many features as some of the more expensive models, but it is usually found at a very reasonable price and covers all the basics. It can easily show you amongst other things: how much electricity the plugged-in appliance is consuming in Watts / KiloWatts, how much this costs per hour, the supply voltage at your home and how much electricity the connected appliance has used over time in kWh or pence.

  • Working voltage: 90-250VAC @ 50-60Hz
  • Power range: 0.2 - 3120 Watts
  • Current range: 0 - 13.00 Amps
  • Voltage range: 90 - 250 Volts
  • Cost per unit: 0.00 - 99.99 £/kWh

It's worth pointing out that in common with most budget plug-in monitors, this one has no battery backup, so you have to remember to take your readings before unplugging it.
