Current Cost
The Current Cost brand
Current Cost have been producing wireless energy monitors in the UK for a few years now, having manufactured and supplied in excess of one million units. Until recently, their focus has been to supply direct to national energy companies who, in turn, provide their monitors to consumers in conjunction with Eco-Tariffs and promotions. In the Spring of 2009 Current Cost took the decision to commence retail sales of their monitor systems direct to the public, coinciding with the launch of their new model, the CC128 Envi. We are pleased to have been selected as the first retail partner for Current Cost wireless energy monitors and have added the new CC128 Envi to our line-up.
January 2010 has seen the launch of Current Cost's new entry-level monitor, the Trec. This monitor offers basic electricity monitoring at a low price point, is compatible with other devices in the Current Cost range and includes a three year manufacturer's warranty. Check our product description of the Trec and comparison chart for more details.
Simplicity, reliability, flexibility
In their remit to supply the energy companies, Current Cost took a slightly different approach to the design of their energy monitors, placing simplicity, reliability and flexibility high on their list of priorities. As a result, their monitors feature a mains powered display unit and a very easy to fit clamp and transmitter. The setup for the Current Cost is remarkably simple for such a versatile device. All the standard information about your electricity use in on permanent display through a very large and clear panel. In common with other wireless electricity monitor systems, Current Cost monitors help reduce electricity consumption in the home by enabling you to see exactly how much you are spending. By seeing the immediate impact in pence per hour of replacing standard light bulbs with low-energy ones, switching off unnecessary devices throughout the home, etc. you are naturally motivated to save energy.

Powerful hidden features
Out of the box, apart from the surprisingly heavy transmitter unit, the Current Cost monitor looks pretty standard fare. If you want to, you can have the monitor set up and running within a few minutes and use it in exactly the same way as any other energy monitor. But the apparent simplicity of this monitor hides a secret. The new CC128 Envi is probably the most flexible and powerful electricity monitoring system yet released in the UK.
Monitor individual appliances

Current Cost are the first manufacturer to incorporate the facility to monitor up to nine individual appliances through a single display unit and view this data either on-screen or with a PC using the optional data cable and software. This facility is expected to be available from late Summer 2010 by adding individual appliance modules (IAMs) to your system. These IAMs will be sold in packs of three and can be used to accurately track the cost of running any household appliance with a standard three pin plug. Current Cost do not supply software for use with their monitors, but access to the stored data is open source and there is already a thriving community of users who have so far produced three different programs for this purpose. The additional monitoring channels can also be used to discreetly monitor three phase supplies, or old-fashioned dual circuit Economy 7 supplies.
An evolving system
Although Current Cost are the very latest brand to join our line-up, they already have a proven track record with the big energy companies. In our own tests, we've found the Envi CC128 to be one of the most accurate monitors available, tracking our daily supply meter readings to within 4%. With the planned arrival of the individual appliance modules later in the year, built-in PC connectivity, and potential for remote monitoring via the internet on the horizon, Current Cost certainly have an eye on the future. Although in this day and age no product can truly claim to be 'future proof', Current Cost appear to be making a pretty good job of it.
