The Current Cost brand

Current Cost have been producing wireless energy monitors in the UK for a few years now, having manufactured and supplied in excess of one million systems.  Until recently, their focus had been to supply direct to national energy companies who, in turn, provide their monitors to consumers in conjunction with Eco-Tariffs and promotions.  In the Spring of 2009 Current Cost took the decision to commence retail sales of their monitor systems direct to the public, coinciding with the launch of their new model, the CC128 Envi.  The latest model from Current Cost, the EnviR, builds on the success of the original CC128 to include potential for both gas and water monitoring, plus a USB cable in the box.

January 2010 saw the launch of Current Cost's entry-level monitor, the Trec.  This monitor offers basic electricity monitoring at a low price point, is compatible with other devices in the Current Cost range and includes a three year manufacturer's warranty.  Check our product description of the Trec and comparison chart for more details.

Simplicity, reliability, flexibility

In their remit to supply the energy companies, Current Cost took a slightly different approach to the design of their energy monitors, placing simplicity, reliability and flexibility high on their list of priorities.  As a result, their monitors feature a mains powered display unit and a very easy to fit clamp and transmitter.  Setup for the Current Cost range is remarkably simple for such versatile devices.  All the standard information about your electricity use in on permanent display through a very large and clear panel.  In common with other wireless electricity monitor systems, Current Cost monitors help reduce electricity consumption in the home by enabling you to see exactly how much you are spending. By seeing the immediate impact in pence per hour of replacing standard light bulbs with low-energy ones, switching off unnecessary devices throughout the home, etc. you are naturally motivated to save energy.

Powerful hidden features

Out of the box, apart from the surprisingly heavy transmitter unit, the Current Cost monitor looks pretty standard fare.  If you want to, you can have the monitor set up and running within a few minutes and use it in exactly the same way as any other energy monitor.  But the apparent simplicity of this monitor hides a secret.  The new Current Cost EnviR is probably the most flexible and powerful electricity monitoring system yet released in the UK.

Monitor individual appliances

Current Cost are the first manufacturer to incorporate the facility to monitor up to nine individual appliances through a single display unit and view this data either on-screen or with a PC using the USB data cable and optional software.  This facility is enabled by adding individual appliance monitors (IAMs) to your system.  These IAMs are sold both singly and in packs of three and can be used to accurately track the cost of running any household appliance with a standard three pin plug.  Current Cost do not supply software for use with their monitors, but access to the stored data is open source and there is already a thriving community of users who have so far produced three different programs for this purpose.  The additional monitoring channels can also be used to discreetly monitor three phase supplies, or old-fashioned dual circuit Economy 7 supplies.

An evolving system

Current Cost already have a proven track record with the big energy companies and are constantly adding to the flexibility of their range.  In our own tests, we've found the Current Cost range to be one of the most accurate available, tracking our daily supply meter readings to within 4%.  With individual appliance monitoring capability, built-in PC connectivity, and the facility for remote monitoring via the internet using the optional Current Cost Bridge, Current Cost certainly have an eye on the future.  Although in this day and age no product can truly claim to be 'future proof', Current Cost appear to be making a pretty good job of it.

Current Cost EnviR (Black)

In March 2011 Current Cost launched the new EnviR model as an upgrade and replacement to the previous CC128 Envi.  The new EnviR is almost identical to the previous model and includes all of the outgoing model's features which made it the most advanced monitor of its time. In its basic suplied form, you can use the EnviR as a reliable and accurate wireless energy monitor with its comprehensive array of display data and built-in memory function.  However, if you'd like to study your energy use in more detail you can hook the monitor up to your computer using the supplied data cable and free to download software.  The EnviR has the capacity to monitor individual appliances in your home with up to nine channels with 'Individual Appliance Monitors' (IAMs) available to purchase as optional extras.  Naturally, the EnviR display is compatible with both Economy 7 and three phase supplies.  Additional sensors and transmitters are available, if required.

Separate receiving channels have been built into the EnviR to facilitate the monitoring of domestic gas supplies and water meters in the future.  Current Cost anticipate releasing new meter reading acessories which will be compatible with the EnviR to take advantage of this facility during 2011.

Current Cost have cleverly created a monitor which is likely to appeal to both technophobes and technophiles alike.  We can see that the Current Cost EnviR is a powerful and versatile monitoring system with plenty of scope, yet it is still incredibly easy to set up and use.
