So how do you know if your home is properly insulated or not?

You've probably seen those hi-tec thermal imaging cameras on television where an image is produced of the home, showing the hotspots where the house is 'leaking' heat away. Those cameras are frighteningly expensive, but there is potentially another way you can check for cool/hotspots using an Infrared Thermometer like this one from Black & Decker.

Infrared thermometers measure radiated heat, so by using one of these, you will be able to examine the windows, walls and doors of your home to gain an understanding of the heat potentially being lost. Internally, lost heat will show up as cold spots. Conversely, lost heat on the outside of your home will be measured as hot spots.
